Fat Kid Fridays.
Fridays are really the only day we look forward to eating at the DFAC. Because Friday is the Afghan weekend and most Afghans do not work, it’s a “low-ops” day for most of us on RS HQ. This just means, unless something is going on, we don’t have to come into the office until 12:30.
More importantly, it’s the day when the DFAC starts serving later and serves brunch; meaning I can eat French toast and eggs for lunch. Then on Friday night, they serve steak and crab legs. The surf-n-turf is ok, but what I really look forward to is the molten lava cake.
Keep in mind, this is an army DFAC, so its not like a soufflé or anything, but it’s “Afghan good enough.” It’s basically a scoop chocolate sheet cake baked over a bed of chocolate pudding and kept on a warm grill, dropped in a paper cup with a scoop of ice cream on top. I’m not an ice cream guy but their cakes are always dry so I get a little bit to assist the pudding in keeping the cake palatable. The bonus is when they serve it with cookies and cream instead of vanilla.
It’s a good thing Fridays are low-ops and usually not much goes on Friday nights because after a salad, steak, green beans dripping in butter, mac n cheese, candied yams and lava cake, I’m basically useless the rest of the night and fight to stay awake until 8:30 when I can go back to my room and watch an episode of Archer and go to sleep.
Yep. Doing the Lord’s work protecting my country over here.
